Carbon Monoxide Dangers

Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can easily cause death.  It is completely odorless and colorless, so many people are unaware that they are being exposed to it at all, increasing their chances for  injury or death.  If your job involves equipment that is fueled by combustible engines, such as mechanical repair jobs, lawn care jobs, or some factories and manufacturers, you may be at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning, because it is often produced by burning various fuels.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Although carbon monoxide poisoning is not extremely common, due to workplace precautions against it, it still affects hundreds of people every year in the United States.  If a person continues to be exposed to carbon monoxide and does not get away from it, they can quickly be affected to a point that they can no longer be treated, and death is, unfortunately, the most common consequence.  If you notice the following symptoms in yourself or someone you know on the job, you may be experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • loss of consciousness
  • vomiting
  • loss of muscular ability

If these signs are apparent in someone you know, you should seek medical attention immediately.  If this exposure to carbon monoxide occurred at the workplace, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits for your injuries.
