Feng Shui Your Rugs

Feng shui is an ancient system for directing the flow of universal energy, known as Chi. With roots that stretch thousands of years back (by some estimates nearly five thousand years, by more conservative estimates two thousand) to ancient China, feng shui has intrigued people from many different cultures. Feng shui is used to attract good, positive Chi into your home in the hopes that this will then be mirrored in the flow of Chi in your body.

While traditional feng shui concepts can be very restricting and confusing, in popular western culture feng shui principles are now applied more loosely to help people invite good energy in their homes and their lives. Here we’ll explain how feng shui can be used to help you pick the right floor rugs for your house.

Entryway

In feng shui the main entry into the house is considered incredibly important, because this is where energy enters your home from the outside world. Many people like to put small rugs or welcome door mats at their door. Not only is this a practical choice, but it can help you claim ownership of your home and its energy. However, avoid rugs with good luck symbols or personalized rugs with your family name on them. These create negative energy every time people wipe their feet all over you or your good intentions.

Living Spaces

Rugs can encourage healthy energy flow in the home by highlighting certain areas of different rooms. For example, rugs that highlight gathering places promote good Chi. Consider placing a rug in your living room and then arranging your furniture around that rug. Or place a rug underneath your table in the dining room to highlight the area where the family comes together to eat and share the events of the day.

Colour

Colour is considered a very strong source of energy. Feng shui thinks of colours as belonging to five elements. Use these colours in rugs to create the type of atmosphere you desire for the particular room you’re decorating.

Fire –  Passionate, invigorating, and inspiring creativity. Examples: Red, orange.

Earth – Calming, stress-relieving. Examples: Brown, beige.

Metal – Clarity, efficiency, and cleanliness. Examples: Grey, white.

Water -  Refreshing, symbolizing purity. Examples: Blue, black.

Wood – Health and growth. Examples: Brown, green.

Follow these feng shui tips when purchasing rugs and placing them in your home and you’ll have no trouble creating rooms that feel welcoming and balanced!
