Categories of Domestic Violence
Understanding the specific charge against you is very important in domestic violence cases, since charges are typically quite different and carry different penalties for conviction. Some of the main categories of domestic violence include:
- Domestic assault – the threat of or actual physical injury is inflicted on another person
- Domestic battery – physical injury is inflicted on another person
- Endangering a child – defendant exhibits behaviors/actions that threaten the safety of children in the household
- Restraining order violation – defendant makes illegal contact against the stipulations of his/her restraining order
